We always seem to be longing for that time in the future. That time when we have everything we’ve worked for and things finally have fallen into place. I love dreaming big and working steadily towards a vision, however, we mustn’t forget the magic of the life we are living today.
This Time is Unique
Many years ago, I was just starting out as a songwriter and was retraining my voice after having sung classically for many years. I couldn’t wait to record my own original songs (I have recorded 10 originals and I’m sure I will create more in the future). That was an exciting time of anticipation. I was working part time and things weren’t perfect but I remember thinking that I would never be that age again and that I had to savour all the details of the life I was living at that moment. It was a special time.
The truth is that every year is unique and special. You may not be where you want to be yet, but there is a magic whilst you’re this exact age, living in that exact house or flat and doing exactly what you are doing now. One day, you’ll look back on this time and remember the magic of this time, even if things aren’t perfect right now.
Don’t Wait For Perfect
We are all guilty of this. We put off things and live under the false assumption that everything will be perfect when this or that happens in the future. When I meet the right person, when I get my dream job or get my own business off the ground, when I get to move to this city or place and have the perfect home. It’s important to have visions and goals, but we also have to remember that no matter what we have or what we achieve, life will never be perfect. Perhaps that’s the beauty of it?
It’s about seeing the beauty and the magic amidst all the challenges and if you are a person who values personal growth like I do, you won’t wish for a perfect life. Not even in the future. It’s the challenges that makes us grow and evolve. That’s a continuous journey. Perfect would actually be pretty boring!
The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.
- Marcel Proust
The Best Way to Get Ahead
Ironically, the best way to actually get ahead and to bring about positive change is to embrace the journey and let go of the resistance of the now. When you are resisting the now you are resisting your own life and all the blessings that you have closed your eyes to. Things may not be perfect or even ideal in your life right now, but trust that the present is a needed portal and gateway into the future you seek.
You don’t have to wait for the future to feel how you want to feel. Stop for a second. Breathe. Slow down. There’s a magic in your life right now that you have not acknowledged. This unique, imperfect time will never come again and there will be things you miss about this time in the future. So savour them now.
Embrace every beautiful and challenging thing about your current life. You get to experience all of it and that’s a true gift. Change is inevitable. The good, the bad and the ugly. It all changes, transforms and transcends the present moment.
Be here now, whilst you get excited for what’s to come.
