I’ve learnt the hard way that rushing and hustling can lead to burn out and get you further away from what you want rather than closer to it. It’s counterproductive. Yet being too relaxed is also not good. We need to take steady, consistent action towards our goals without stress. Finding that balance can be easier said than done.
I Forgot What I Already Knew
Even though we logically know something, putting that into practice consistently is a whole other matter. That’s where the real difficulty lies. I know so well that slow and steady wins the race. That slowing down to speed up is the way to go. I remind myself of this constantly. Yet I can still fall prey to my old ways of being from time to time.
The other week I felt so motivated, fired up and excited to move forwards that I overdid it. I hustled too hard and was operating from a place of fear and stress rather than from faith, calm assurance, alignment and flow. Sometimes we have to take one step backwards, to be able to course correct and move forwards in the right way.
It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.
- Confucius
What this led to was a re-realisation of what I already knew so well. I was forced to rest, take it easy and slow everything down to the bare minimum at the end of the week to recoup my energy. This means that by trying to speed up, I actually slowed myself down. Ironic but true! This is definitely a trap I have fallen into repeatedly in the past. Progress can be messy.
Divine Timing
There is a divinely orchestrated timing at play in our lives. If we try bypass this timing by speeding up it gets us nowhere. We’re not alone in this world. We are connected to everyone else and it’s an intricate, delicate web. Things beyond our understanding have to fall into place behind the scenes. Trust that you are right where you need to be and you are on track.
You can afford to go slow and steady. There is no rush. What is for you will be for you at the right time. Make sure that whatever you are doing and creating is sustainable long term. Create and build slowly and steadily with flow, grace, trust and joy. That’s what’s going to speed you up long term.
I’ll keep reminding myself of this consistently as I tend to get carried away with excitement and enthusiasm which can mean that I end up overdoing it. Slow and steady takes practice. Every day a little progress is all it takes. Rest when you need to rest. Listen to your body, listen to your soul.
You’re right on time.✨

Such wisdom in this post, Hege. One of the lessons I am trying to learn (Substack really helps with this) is that continual, steady movement forward is better than sprinting till I get too tired and stopping. It’s so easy to run fast and go too fast then give up when if you just keep moving forward at the steady pace, you will reach your finish line quicker. Thanks for helping us see the best path forward.
I get this so much. learning the resilient slow burn and tending the fire right with you friend. Thank you for your honesty with the learning. gently gently Together.
